I just recently went through the ‘catch all’ walk in closet right by our front door, and I have some tips and tricks that will help you (and myself) keep it all organized so it doesn’t get to be the ‘catch all’ place ever again!!!!
First off, let me explain that we just moved into a new house a couple months ago, I also did a CRAZY thing, and planned my daughters birthday party a week afterwards which literally lit a fire under my butt to get that place whipped into shape. The problem with not having much time to unpack is that I just threw things in the general area they were supposed to go instead of taking my time to create systems that would make life easy to stay organized. The closet right by our front door was a PRIME example.
Last weekend I just went after it, and here are a few tips and tricks that I implemented that are helping me IMMENSELY.
Tip 1 – Find a Basket for Each Person
Know what each kid/adult needs and will end up being needed right before they head out the door for school. My daughter always seems to need a pair of socks because she comes downstairs without them, so I threw a couple pairs in for her. Grab a basket that fits the space and put each person’s items in there. If it gets too full, it’s time to declutter.
Tip 2 – LABEL Your Stuff
I found some adorable labels that go right onto my wicker baskets that have helped me and my husband SO much in finding things.
Tip 3 – Create a Specific Spot For Each Thing That Comes In Throughout The Week
Examples could include backpacks and shoes. That’s why there is a bar with hooks for the backpacks on the side and a shoe rack for both my husband and I, and another shoe rack for my kiddos. There is a coat tree on the side of our closet for my husband’s and my coats, and then 2 more hooks in the closet for my daughter and son. I have a separate spot in my kitchen for mail, but you could always put something on the inside of your closet door for that as well.
Tip 4 – Find a Small Enough Multi Use Organizer for ALL The Things
I have a rainbow rolling cart organizer for my workout bands, dog bells, AND arts and crafts. The one in the picture above would be ideal for finding a multi-use organizer though if you have the space. It is SO easy for my kids to see and use, plus when it’s time to pick up, everything just goes right back in the cart!
Tip 5 – Clear The Path Daily
Honestly, this is something that will really help you maintain your space and WANT to keep it organized. When shoes, dirty socks, and backpacks are all over the entryway it’s easy to lose sight of the system you created, but this is why you created it! Take a deep breath and think of how much you deserve a clean entryway after how hard you worked to get it that way! Put the stuff where you feel it belongs.
My husband will not always put his shoes away, instead of getting more and more frustrated, just remember he could care less if his shoes are there. It’s YOU that has the issue with it, so instead of getting frustrated just put them away. This is WAY easier said than done, I will admit, but it will help you so much in the long run. 🙂 Also, I found this adorable bench on amazon and put my husbands work boots in the cupboards of it! It is one of those things you will never regret taking the time to do for yourself. Even if you have 10 minutes, that is better than doing nothing, which I feel like doing most days when I come home, but turn that music on and get to work! It is a gift to yourself that you deserve so lets get after it!:)
